Vellum Studio — Brand Identity
A complete identity system for a premium editorial photography studio concept.
An identity for a studio whose work is the point. The mark has to establish authority on a masthead and then get out of the way, because anything competing with the photograph is a failure. The brief covered the full system: mark, palette, typography, application, and the standards that keep it intact once other hands are applying it.
- 01
The mark serves the work
For a studio selling images, identity is framing rather than decoration. The mark is built to sit at the edge of a composition and hold its authority at small scale, in a single colour, over an unpredictable photograph.
- 02
A palette that survives contact with imagery
Colour is restricted to a neutral base with a single warm accent. Neutrals let the photography set the temperature of a layout; the accent exists to mark hierarchy, not to supply the brand's personality.
- 03
Typography carries the differentiation
With a deliberately quiet mark, the type system does the work of recognition: a distinctive editorial face for titling against a neutral workhorse beneath it, with the relationship between them fixed by ratio rather than left to taste.
- 04
Standards written for other hands
An identity is only as good as its worst application. The guide specifies clearspace, minimum sizes, permitted and prohibited treatments, and behaviour over imagery — which is where systems of this kind usually fail.
