// the brief

A project-management product with real technical merit and no obvious buyer. It enters a market with entrenched incumbents, long procurement cycles, and buyers who are not the users. The brief was to find the wedge — the specific customer, in the specific situation, for whom every alternative is visibly worse — and to build both the launch and the funding story on top of it.

// the approach
  1. 01

    Segment by pain, not by size

    Company size is a convenient axis and a poor one. Segmentation runs instead on the moment of acute pain: teams that have just outgrown a general-purpose tool, just failed an audit, or just absorbed another team. The wedge is a trigger event, not a firmographic.

  2. 02

    Name the alternative honestly

    Positioning that ignores an incumbent's real strengths does not survive a procurement review. The narrative concedes what the incumbent does well, then competes on the ground where it structurally cannot follow.

  3. 03

    Price against the budget it comes from

    Whether the spend displaces software budget, headcount budget, or nothing at all sets the ceiling far more than feature parity does. The pricing model is built backwards from the line item it will be charged to.

  4. 04

    Model revenue as a sequence of assumptions

    The plan states the assumptions that would have to hold — conversion, cycle length, expansion — and identifies which single assumption breaks the model first. That one becomes the first thing tested after launch.

  5. 05

    One narrative, two audiences

    The investor story and the customer story share a spine. Where they diverge, the divergence is deliberate, documented, and defensible in either room.
